Absolutely loved reading through this series. So many cool ideas and interesting dynamics in such little time. I was wondering if you were going to continue it at some point, or if it's reached its conclusion? Either way, I'm definitely going to be reading through your novel extracts next
I was also curious if there were any specific influences for the zombies in here, since I feel like I've seen similar ideas before, but I enjoyed your interpretation of it more
Thanks! Deadland's on the back burner a little bit, as are the extracts that are up at the moment, but I've got a whole bunch of things out: sci fi and fantasy mainly although some horror is coming soon.
The Deadland zombies are kind of a twist on Romero's but a bit faster, crossed with the zombies in a comic I read where the zombies were completely aware as they were when they were alive. These ones obviously aren't as aware. It's more about the people than the zombies though, and how they deal with the world as it is now.
There was another comic, a shorter one, where a guy was pretending to be a zombie so he could survive, going as far as participating in killing people that were still alive and eating them. That's the extreme end of the spectrum but a really cool idea as well that gave me a little inspiration.
Awesome, yeah, it looks like there's plenty to get through for the time being. Will check it out soon!
Both of those comics sound brilliantly clever. It's a little different, but it also gave me some Shaun of the Dead energy, where I felt like "Were these people already "dead" before turning into zombies." As in, how different are their new monotonous routines compared to what they were doing when they were human... if that makes any sense?
I'm yet to attempt writing zombies... but it does make me wonder what other interesting perspectives could work for them. Your stuff really does seem perfect though, where the zombies and the humans almost share the same level of humanity, with the zombies stuck reliving twisted versions of their old lives and the humans similarly trapped in this twisted new way of living. Am excited to see more, I have no doubt it'll be worth the wait :)
I get you completely, yeah, and thank you for the compliment! It's always nice to hear that the stories are hitting the place they're intended to hit.
From the human perspective there's a dose of conformity in there as well, conforming to survive, herd mentality kind of thing.
Both of the comics I mentioned were in a compendium of various zombie comics, I forget the name of it. The one where the zombies are aware is called "Dead Eyes Open" if I remember correctly.
Yeah, ok, that makes sense. I love the idea of having to “conform” to the horde instead of just physically succumbing like in most other zombie fiction. The herd mentality idea works really well if other humans are to be introduced and developed too.
Obviously those other ways of doing it are cool as well, but hearing you explain this twist on it is super interesting.
And that’s perfect, cheers, I’ll see if I can find the comic
